The Mourne
Mountains are a walkers paradise where old mountain tracks take you past lakes,
rivers, woodland and up to the many fine peaks and the famous Mourne Wall. The Mournes offers fine rock climbing for which a guide book is
available from the Mountaineering Council of
Ireland and from the
Mourne
Heritage Trust's Mountain Line. Sandy beaches are plentiful on the nearby Irish Sea coast. There's the resort town of Newcastle with its golden sands, restaurants and Irish traditional pubs, Tyrella beach, Murlough Nature Reserve and Cranfields blue flag beach all of which offer miles of sand and views across the sea to the Isle of Man and Carlingford Lough. The Mourne Mountains are dotted with ancient settlements and castles, including the Norman keep at nearby Greencastle, and the small coastal towns are a delight.
The busy Kilkeel Harbour provides an insight into the deep sea fishing industry and a little further south are the charming Victorian seaside villages of Warrenpoint and Rostrevor and the small harbour village of Annalong. Just 12 miles away is Newcastle, one of the liveliest coastal towns in Northern Ireland and home of the famous Royal County Down Golf Club. |
