Derry derives its name from
the Irish, 'Doire Calgach', meaning 'the oak grove of Calgach',
a pre-Christian warrior whose
encampment was nearby.
In
the 10th century the city was known as 'Doire Colmcille' in honour
of St Columba. The name 'Londonderry' celebrates the city's past
links with the City of London. Known today as 'Derry', the city is
the commercial centre of the north west of Ireland.
The
Siege of Derry in 1689 lasted 105 days and brought lasting fame
to Londonderry. The city's walls are a major attraction. Just over a
mile in circumference, they provide a unique view of both the oldest
parts of the city and its modern commercial heart. There
are a number of fine buildings in the inner city including St
Columba's Cathedral (1633) and the neo-gothic Guildhall. There are
walking, horse-drawn carriage and open top bus tours of the inner
city and cruises on the river Foyle. A visit to the Tower Museum is
a must.
The
Derry Visitor
provides information on accommodation, eating out and things to see
and do, as does the
Northern Ireland Tourist Board's website.
