Belfast, Northern Ireland's largest city, has a population of 580,000. Belfast's growth dates from the 19th century when rapid expansion in linen, shipbuilding and heavy engineering made the city a leading industrial centre. By 1901, Belfast had become Ireland's largest city, a position now held by Dublin.

Following a period of stagnation and civil unrest in the 1970s and 80s, Belfast has reinvented itself to become a vibrant, modern city with a strong sense of its cultural identity.

Belfast has fine restaurants, pubs - real Irish pubs... try an historical pub tour. There are challenging golf courses in the city and nearby. Northern Ireland's heritage is showcased in the superb Ulster Folk & Transport Museum . Theatres including the Grand Opera House. Belfast's Waterfront Hall provides a sophisticated venue for concerts and arts events and the Odyssey Arena complex houses exhibition, sporting, ice hockey and rock concert arenas.

Everyone knows about Titanic, not everyone knows that the ill-fated ship was built in Belfast. It's possible to visit the Harland & Wolff dock where Titanic and her sister ship, Olympic, were built side-by-side. You can cruise the lower Lagan river and Belfast Lough, and see where Titanic was built and launched in 1915.

Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau's website has details of accommodation, city tours, and things to see and do in and around Belfast and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board offers information on holidaying in Northern Ireland.
